Proof that sticking very close to the source material isn't always a good thing, Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone is a very enjoyable film that hasn't lost any of its ability to enchant and impress.

The sets look absolutely fantastic, some of the best in a fantasy film. You feel like the backgrounds are coming to life, mostly because, they often are. The effects have held up really well. Nothing exceptional by todays standards, but still very admirable.

The acting from the kids is easy to criticise, but does give it a certain childish charm, and you can tell how hard they're trying. Add on top of that the fact that the central trio are perfectly cast and all have their memorable moments, and you can't be too upset by their frequently stilted deliveries.

The main problem is it's adherence to the novel, which feels very rigid and workmanlike, leaving little room for spontaneity, and makes it feel like more of a series of set events than a fully fluid experience.

But with that said the film has so much likability and creativity that's its managed to endure for over a decade and holds a very special place in our culture. It's sense of wonderment, discovery and exploration are sure to sweep you away.
