Review of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) by Kevin R — 31 May 2014
We can expect great things from you.
Harry Potter was orphaned as a boy and left to be raised with his aunt, uncle, and cousin. He is severally neglected until the day comes where he is summoned to a school of magic to follow in his family's footsteps. He first needs to get there, and once there, try to fit in with the other magicians. As he settles in with some friends, he discovers a sorcerer's stone resides in the attack of the school that is guarded by a three headed dog. What is even more interesting is someone wants to steal the stone. Can Harry and his friends stop the thief?
"How do you be nearly headless?".
"Like this.".
Chris Columbus, director of Home Alone 1 & 2, Mrs. Doubtfire, Nine Months, Stepmom, Bicentennial Man, Rent, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret, and Percy Jackson & The Lightening Thief, delivers Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The storyline for this picture is interesting and a bit more kid centric than I generally like. The CGI was also just above average and felt too fluffy and like the characters were never at risk. The acting was okay and as you'd expect for the genre.
"I wondered when I'd be seeing you, Mr. Potter.".
I actually saw this a long time ago when I was writing movie reviews on Amazon and I lost this review during the transition. I never went back and watched this again until recently. I will say I enjoyed this more now than I did when it was first released. I would say this is a huge step down from the quality of the Lord of the Rings movies, but it is a step up from the Percy Jackson films. Overall, this is definitely a must see!
"We do not speak his name.".
Grade: B.
