Review of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) by Stephen Z — 05 Aug 2014
The Harry Potter franchise has obviously become a huge phenomenon with a devoted following, in large part because of the films. But every franchise has a beginning, and as the first book in the series, The Sorcerer's Stone was that film.
Fortunately, under the direction of Chris Columbus, this movie took off like a Nimbus 2000! The Sorcerer's Stone succeeds on so many levels, not only for adapting the novel, but also for creating an entire world filled with witches, wizards, and all of the many mythical creatures we've all heard of in legend. This film is so much fun and is really engaging, even for those who haven't read the book. And for those who have read the book, you will be pleasantly surprised at how close the film remains to the book. In fact, of all of the Harry Potter films, this one is one of the truest adaptions of the novels. The casting of Richard Harris as Dumbledore and Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid is nothing short of genius.
The Sorcerer's Stone is definitely recommended. Anyone can enjoy it. I will say that this movie is more geared towards children, and lacks the darker tone of the later films, but for a first installment that is introducing us to the characters, that is perfectly acceptable. And finally, some advice: Read the novel before you watch this film. Not only will it keep you spoiler free when you're reading it, but it will help you to better appreciate this film.
