Review of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) by Austin W — 10 Aug 2014
Saw it as an adult first. To be honest, I'm really not sure what all the hubub was about. It was a mediocre movie in my opinion. Some cool visuals and a cool world, but there were some really jumpy parts where time passes awkwardly, things aren't explained, and it threw me off. Like we are supposed to care about the house cup? Its mentioned one time in passing. They don't win anything or get special privileges. They don't get a lifetime supply of candy. No booze or women of the night. They just win. Yay. Why are we supposed to hate Slytherin house? No one ever says. Oh you're out of bed after dark hanging with Hagrid? Oh well then your arbitrary punishment is to...go back outside with Hagrid after dark.
Maybe I'm just over thinking it, but I thought it was muddled at best. Great look and feel, cool world, but loose plot and some weird unexplained things kept me from giving it a thumbs up.
