Review of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) by Magnus G — 20 Sep 2014
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone does its job well as an introduction to the world of Harry Potter and even after over a decade still entertains with its tight pacing and credible performances.
Like many major blockbusters at the time though, it hasn't aged very well. Whilst by no means a bad film, it feels way too safe when watched today particularly when compared to its more mature sequels.
The plot is a bit too by-the-numbers and the special effects can be hilariously bad. The film also tries to trick you into thinking one character is the villain which makes it even more obvious that it isn't the case.
The film is very nostalgic for me though so I have a fun time watching it now and again. Just don't expect to be too impressed when watching it. Leave that for the sequels (most of them anyway).
