Review of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) by Ryan H — 07 Jul 2014
What a difference a DP makes! While it's the second film to be helmed by David Yates, it's cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel (Amelie, Across the Universe) that makes this installment mesmerizing to watch. The composition of shots finally befits the fantastical nature of the story- it's damn near epic.
This film also finally asks the audience to make an emotional investment in the characters, and actions truly begin to unfold real consequences.
The casting decisions made by the franchise as a whole begin to prove themselves as these characters start to truly resemble their intended forms. It only took six films to become great (excluding Azkaban, a highlight in my opinion) but I'm glad we got to where the series should be.
