Review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) by Isaac B — 18 Oct 2015
An epic conclusion, to an epic franchise. This film certainly carried the greatest pressure to be a success. If this were to flop, the franchise would not be whole and end uncompleted. David Yates, Steve Kloves, and J.K. Rowling delivered a phenomenal end to the series. It's dark, it's nerve racking, and as expected, terribly sad. For me, The Half-Blood Prince and the Deathly Hollows Part 1 are my least favorite films in the series. This film quickly redeems the unfinished feeling felt after Part 1 and although dark, brings much more light than seen in the sixth installment. What is maybe the best thing about this film, is that it never forgets its foundation. All the students from the original film are back and many have their own moment to shine. Neville Longbottom even has his shining moment. It has so many giddy call backs to the series' history that will make the fans who miss the happier and more magical tone of the first films ecstatic.
Best of all, that final confrontation. The tension between Voldemort and Harry has never been higher, the stakes never more dyer, and the conclusion is just too satisfying.
This film does have some minor nit-picks holding it back from taking my favorite spot (still held by the Goblet of Fire) and most of these are continuity questions I have that are unanswered. To avoid spoilers, these will remain unlisted.
I had fun emerging myself back into this franchise and am quite sad to see it end. Contrary to popular belief, the Harry Potter films are not nerdy however, high quality entertainment and just damn good films.
