Review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) by Do You Even Jay C — 21 Aug 2013
Here is what the official RT consensus says:
"Thrilling, powerfully acted, and visually dazzling, Deathly Hallows Part II brings the Harry Potter franchise to a satisfying -- and suitably magical -- conclusion.".
I respectfully disagree. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is a mixed bag for me. On one hand, the film is expertly made, with some amazing cinematography and special effects. The acting is superb and well rounded. Then, on the other hand, it's pretty long. The source material isn't that good, and it takes itself way too seriously. My sister is a huge fan of HP and she loved every minute of this film. Me, going as a non HP fan, didn't enjoy it as much.
HP 7 is a film strictly for fans. I felt excluded from all the inside jokes, meaning, etc. Also, the humor in this film was non existent. I mean sure, there were suppose to be hilarious moments (I think). But I didn't laugh. I feel a film about people aiming sticks at each other should have much more comedic moments. I blame the source material for doing nothing fun. That's the film's problem: It wasn't fun. The film focused on all the technical aspects and less on plot. Basically, Voldemort wages war with Hogwarts. The film had a couple of sub plots that weren't really interesting to me. Also, the length is too much. 2 hours 11 minutes is pretty long, but it felt more along 2hr 45min, to me. I guess that whole "Harry dying" scene was quite boring.
Overall, this is a mixed bag. It has wonderful scenery, acting, and cinematography. However, it is let down by a less than inspired script and the fact that they're fighting with sticks. My final score for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is *drum roll* 4.5/10.
