Review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) by Caesar S — 07 Dec 2014
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 gets the job done. It comes up short in some ways, though. It feels like half of a movie, because the whole thing is the climax! Conversely, Deathly Hallows 1 was all exposition.
It saddens me to see the roles of beloved characters like Hagrid and Lupin minimized. Nobody gets a satisfying send off.
When Voldemort is defeated, it is very anticlimactic. He just seems to give up. Then, he blows away into the distance, like shredded wheat.
The kiss between Ron and Hermione came out of nowhere. The feelings which they both had for each other was barely addressed in the films. Harry and Ginny have the same problem. We are given no reason for their mutual affection. In the epilogue, when we see the that the two couples are married, those of us who have not read the books should feel most surprised.
The acting was spectacular. It is hard to imagine that these are the same people who pretended to be actors in "Sorceror's Stone.".
David Yates shows off his superb skills as a director, and handles the final installment in the Harry Potter series quite well.
Overall, it is a very satisfactory finale, despite feeling incomplete.
