Review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010) by Stephen Z — 05 Aug 2014
Combined, the two parts of "The Deathly Hallows" are about 4 and 1/2 hours long. Now, some might say that it is overkill. But I say it's great because it allows the novel to be thoroughly adapted. The fact of the matter is, there really was no way of making this adaption shorter. Unlike all of the other Potter books, there are so many tiny details that are crucial to the plot, that they can't be left out. So yes, I support the decision to make "The Deathly Hallows" a 5-hour adaption.
As for "Part 1" specifically, this is the plot-driven part. This is the one that has a lot of the character development and establishes a lot of the stuff that pays off in "Part 2". That's not to say this movie doesn't have any action. This is still another fun Potter film. The big aerial chase at the beginning and the scene at the Ministry of Magic are both some of the best action scenes in the series.
I will be honest though. This movie does slow down during the second act. Harry and Hermione have an awkward dancing scene, but that's it. The film does pick back up once Harry and Hermione visit Godric's Hollow, so hang in there.
"The Deathly Hallows Part 1" is a very close adaption of the book, and I was happy about that. Should you see it? Yes, absolutely! This is "Part 1" of the finale that so many have long-anticipated. But I should warn you. One of the best things about Rowling's writing is that every little detail comes into play in this finale. So before you watch "The Deathly Hallows" (both parts), at least watch all of the movies again. Really, you should read all of the books, but at the very least, rewatch the movies. That way you can see all of those little details pay off.
