Review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010) by Danny O — 11 Apr 2015
Deathly Hallows 1 is a bit uneventful, but sets the stage for the final chapter really well. Harry Potter is all grown up in this much darker film in which he and his friends Ron and Hermione must hunt horcruxes (pieces of Voldemort's soul) to destroy them and finish the Dark Lord once and for all.
The magic of Hogwarts is missing from this movie, leaving a much needed filler for that enchantment of the Wizarding World. Unfortunately we don't get that, but this movie is still very good. There are some really intense scenes (the forest chase, the climax) and the last ten minutes are very emotional and touching.
The acting once again is top notch, the main protagonists completely owning their roles. The action is suspenseful and exciting, and there are some great character moments within the film. The score is eerie, capturing the essence of the film.
There are some pacing issues, and the movie doesn't cover much ground in terms of plot (being part 1 of 2 and all) but it still doesn't disappoint, and makes fans and audiences alike eager for the final chapter.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 gets 4/5 stars (A-).
