Review of Harry Brown (2009) by Katelyn B — 19 Apr 2011
After losing his terminally ill wife and best/only friend in quick succession, the latter murdered by a local gang of hoodie thugs, Royal Marine veteran Harry Brown (Michael Caine) has hit breaking point.
With the police unable or unwilling to dispense justice themselves, Harry takes to the streets with a violently acquired duffel bag of guns, determined to take an eye for an eye. Yes, it's a British indie Death Wish! Aside from the obvious joy of watching a 76-year-old Michael Caine blowing away scumbags there's a lot to admire about the film - the tight storytelling, the dark and foreboding atmosphere and the unflinching violence.
Acting is top notch, especially from Caine, it's great to see him in a proper leading role again rather than propping others up for Christopher Nolan. Harry Brown is a familiar tale but a dark and fearless look at modern Britain and provides a welcome meaty role for Michael Caine to get his teeth into.
