Review of Harry Brown (2009) by Eric W — 16 Jun 2011
Dirty Harry Brown and Council Estate Hooligans. No doubt that whether it's the UK council estates or American public housing towers, drugs and violence are part of the reality. Still, this film seems filled with straw men set up simply to be mowed down by Mr Brown.
Uglier, more savage, feral - in short, not really human. The easier, I suppose, to allow one to cheer the vigilantism of Brown. It's an ugly exercise, ultimately, in blaming the poor for the outcome of the conditions that created their rage and apathy.
A feel-good movie for those whose own empathy might be called into question for their blind thumbs-up.
