Review of Harry Brown (2009) by Craig C — 29 Sep 2011
If you're a Nicolas Winding Refn fan and "Drive" doesn't manage to live up to his earlier work (as I'm hearing it might not), give this overlooked, gritty little revenge picture a shot.
The first five minutes are in. tense. The first act unfolds in a completely paint-by-numbers sort of way, cribbing conventions and moments from a dozen movies before it. But then things go bananas in new, hardcore ways. I jumped up off the couch when the climactic moment popped off and slapped my hands together so hard my Swiss watch stopped. Checkitout. (Streaming on Netflix.).
