Review of Harry Brown (2009) by Joshua S — 18 Feb 2012
Harry Brown is hard movie to review. Whilst particular scenes and themes are very well crafted and original the film as a whole left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
The cinematography is pretty bland as a whole. The camera never moves, leaving most of the shots very stationary and dull. The plot also falls short, being simple and very predictable.
On the other hand, at points the film shines. One scene set in the house of a gun dealer delivered suspense better than anything I had seen for a long while, another set in a notorious tunnel also had me at the edge of my seat.
However what left me feeling cold at the end of 'Harry Brown' was the morals. Michael Caine plays a bloodthirsty vigilante and the film never punishes him for it. These enemy is the youth of today and they act and are killed more like rodents than human beings. One troubled boy has a record of sexual abuse in which his own family pays him for sex. This boy is captured tortured and ultimately killed by Harry Brown and the film tries to make you think nothing of it. The same sort of thing happens with many youths and it seems strange that the film is glorifying this. Mainly because of it's unfair portrayal of these people 'Harry Brown' is a film I will not be watching again.
