Review of Harper (1966) by Scott G — 04 Oct 2012
Note to future generations, Film Noir and 60's A-Go-Go cannot be juxtaposed.
Paul Newman, Lauren Bacall, Janet Leigh, Shelley Winters and screenwriter William Goldman can't class up this seedy joint. Harper is a very poor man's The Big Sleep, from its loosely cribbed first act to its parroted Chandleresque dialogue. Newman is at his method acting best, but the same cant be said of the rest of the cast who chew far too much scenery.
A novelty piece at best, this one is a deep pick for your Netflix queue or a sleepless night of TCM red eye theater.
