Review of Harold and Maude (1971) by Patrick B — 24 Dec 2011
I can see this becoming one of my all-time favorite films. I loved the sweet relationship between Harold and Maude, and the way the actors make it work by giving terrifically honest performances. But best of all, for me, was director Ashby's dark sense of humor.
I was literally cackling during this movie. From Harold's fake suicide attempts to Maude's disregard for law enforcement as she speeds through toll stops, I was laughing all the way. If you haven't had a chance to see "Harold and Maude", I really recommend you do so.
It is a treasure of a film that is at times sweet and endearing, and other times, the humor is so black that it sticks in your throat... but in a good way.
