Review of Harold and Maude (1971) by Laura L — 12 Mar 2010
This movie is a classic and should be seen by anyone who loves older films. It's one of those movies that is labeled as a romantic comedy and yet it isn't. Yeah it has some great and funny scenes, and Cort and Gordon are brilliant in everry one, but the movie is more then that. There are some darker and more serious aspects that I don't think everyone will get or like.
Cort is excellent in his role and works great with Gordon. I think the under-appreciated actor of the movie though is Pickles who plays Harold's mother. She is great and has all the best lines. Without her the movie wouldn't be half as funny.
My only complaint about this movie really is it moves a little slow and they play "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out" by Cat Stevens way too much. Twice would have been fine, but I think it's in there like 5 times so the song got a little old for me.
If your looking for a romantic movie that is differant from the rest then this is defintly one you should see.
"Tell me, Harold, how many of these, eh, *suicides* have you performed?".
"An accurate number would be difficult to gauge."".
"Well, just give me a rough estimate.".
"A rough estimate? I'd say....fifteen.
"Fifteen?".
"That's a rough estimate.".
"Were they all done for your mother's benefit?".
"No. No, I would not say "benefit.".
