Review of Harlem Nights (1989) by Amy M — 14 Jun 2014
I love this movie and I dust it off every few years so I can just kick back and laugh. It garners an amazing cast and some great lines/scenes. I think the humor of this film was largely lost on people who did not get it's sarcasm and dry humor.
It gets better every time I see it and I'm sorry it's not rated higher. Is it the best period piece ever made? Not even close. You have to understand who Pryor and Murphy were at the time it came out and their brands of comedy.
It's basically them being themselves in a 1930s flick. I wish people would stop analyzing it so hard--jeez, take some time off from being right knowing everything and just let yourself have a good laugh.
The movie isn't trying to be serious, so calm it down and go back to your lives citizens. Then dust it off in a few years and enjoy again. One of my favorite comedies overall and a movie where I catch new stuff every time I see it.
