Review of Harlan County U.S.A. (1977) by Michael E — 17 Jan 2008
This movie for me was intense. It was cinematic for a documentary to the point where I thought these people were characters but rein check, they are the real thing. The corporations and the courts did themselves in as the "villians" of the film.
I never thought the coal mining industry was interesting but the living conditions at home and in the mine are just baffling. Of course it seems one sided but it's better to hear the views of the men who actually mine for coal.
The documentary was well done, no complaints really. *note* this is the first time that I have seen a funeral actually documented. As in you see the body laying in the casket. That's when you know this isn't just a documentary it was a way of life for these people of Harlan County and it's guilt trip that will make you appreciate your life you have today.
Great documentary.
