Review of Harlan County U.S.A. (1977) by Patrick-Thomas G — 22 Sep 2009
Controversial, Beautiful, and in the end Tragic. "Harlan County U.S.A." is without a doubt the best documentary film ever made. The soundtrack includes songs sung by people involved in the union dispute which is actually quite remarkable.
The film starts out trying to be objective but as it delves deeper into the issue, the film like the viewer has to take a side, just like all of the inhabitants of Harlan County did. The film then quickly becomes a subjective piece.
This film can accurately be described as a masterpiece. It is a film that everybody should see at least once. Don't be fooled by the PG rating though parents, the content in this film is deceptive, it contains descriptions of murders and even has live footage of violence.
The history between the coal mining companies and the union is a long and bloody one which is why this film is so powerful.
