Review of Hardcore Henry (2015) by Steve W — 11 Apr 2016
Likened to an extra long video game cutscene, Hardcore Henry is a fresh and original experiment with POV movies and the action genre. It does what it intends to do, which is delivery foot chases, shootouts, and extreme violence to the max.
What it does badly is have little to no story, the movie moves from plot point to plot point, with a character literally telling the protagonist where to go. If the movie tried to give the henchmen some more personality or maybe had some more finesse in some of the shootouts, the result would be a new action classic.
Instead, it gives us a fantastic performance from Sharlto Copley as Jimmy, the villain was pretty cool too, and Tim Roth was criminally underused. The result is an enjoyable thrill ride if you're not prone to motion sickness, worth seeing once but probably not again.
