Review of Hardcore Henry (2015) by Bob G — 15 Apr 2016
One of the best movies I've ever seen. So good in fact that it inspired me to create an account on RT and write a review.
The movie is honest with itself and the audience and never wavers. The action is brilliant without being an unbelievable, 3D mess like many current "action" movies.
Not only is the action spectacular, but the story is amazing too. I don't know if it was the first person perspective, but the rest of the afternoon after seeing the movie I still felt like I was in Henry's world. One of the best things about the story is that it isn't spoon fed to the audience like so much of the formulaic Hollywood atrocities.
The first person camera works great. Of course there were times where I wished I could pan out and see more of what was going on, but being stuck with Henry as kicks, fists, and other weapons seemingly came out of nowhere sold the experience of being a person stuck in the middle of a chaotic fight more that even a classic, well done scene like the panoramic fight scene from the Korean movie "Old Boy." Couple that with the perfect backdrop of a deteriorated Russian metropolis and the movie truly becomes something special.
I'm glad I didn't read any reviews before I went to see it. A low critic review wasn't surprising, but I thought the audience score would be much higher. So don't be scared by the numbers, because as of now 38% of the audience just wasn't hardcore enough for Henry.
