Review of Hardcore Henry (2015) by Mohammed A — 09 Jul 2016
The unbelievable stunt work and kinetic energy here are quite staggering. It will make even jaded moviegoers exclaim "How did they do that" on the regular (even more impressive factoring in the tight budget the team had to work with).
The first two-thirds of "Hardcore Henry" are euphoric; strong effects work complimenting the manic genius of a very gifted filmmaker. Admittedly the insanity wears you down by the closing stretch.
.. and my head (at least) was left spinning. Too much of a good thing? Most definitely. Will some people be repulsed by this little experiment? Absolutely. But to his credit director Ilya Naishuller really doesn't seem to care.
He's delivered a purely divisive film with the propulsive gusto of a madman on amphetamines and a total f*** you attitude. It's a one of a kind gem that's in a league of it's own right now.
