Review of Hardcore Henry (2015) by Brandon W — 12 Jul 2016
Hardcore Henry is the directorial and writing debut of IIya Naishuller who directed the music videos like Bad Mother*bleep* and The Stampede that also uses the same GoPro style as this movie, and it's about Henry that wakes up from his long slumber and got 2 prosthetic arms and 2 legs from his wife that he doesn't remember.
However, a group of people attacked the laboratory, kidnapped Henry's wife, and Henry is the only one that can stop them. We never had a first person perspective movie before except for a movie that was out 5 days before this called Pandemic, but the closest thing we got that style, was found-footage.
I was interested in seeing it, but I wasn't excited for it, even when Brad Jones reviewed it, saying that he loved the film. So when I got to see it, I honestly really had fun with this movie. It's all non-stop action in an over-the-top way, and it's enjoyable to watch.
The parkour scenes are a delight to watch, even when it reminds me of Mirror's Edge. Sharlto Copley is having the time of his life from acting calm and caring, to downright insane and maddening, he's the best part of the film.
Other then Sharlito Copley and Danila Kozlovsky's characters, there's no other character that's worth remembering. The plot can get a bit repetitive in terms of going to a destination and have to do something.
The score is all over the place, but it fits with the tone of the film, making it exciting to watch. I can see why people might not like this as this is a dumb film, but it's a dumb film that I had a lot of fun with, and that's what I wanted out of an action film.
