Review of Hard Target (1993) by Martin O — 11 Apr 2009
I love Jean-Claude Van Damme. I think he has magnetic screen presence and is a bad ass at them martial arts. He also not too bad an actor, as last years "JCVD" showed. But this is where he earned his stripes, "Hard Target".
There are many things that make this film great and they are probably equally between the star and the director, Mr. John bloody Woo (in his first American film). Jean-Claude punches a snake unconscious while sporting the greatest mullet ever committed to celluloid.
He roundhouse kicks a guy off a motorbike and then escapes a helicopter on horseback. There are doves, tonnes of slow-motion and a lot of guns. It has Lance Henriksen proper hamming it up and it has Arnold Vosloo shotgunning a guy at point blank.
It even has a song by Creedance Clearwater Revival at the end, apprently a must for any serious action flick. It's an archetypal early nineties action film but damn it, I love it. With such a star as Jean-Claude Van Damme and the assured action hands of John Woo, this film soars.
Just good movie.
