Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Seth C — 25 Oct 2007
Given that this is Paul Thomas Anderson's first film, it stands to reason that this would be his weakest. Not that I'm knocking the movie--I liked it a lot. It just seems to lack something...I'm not sure what.
It's much less flashy than his later films, and almost entirely comprised of dialogue. But it's still very entertaining and watchable, with great performances from all involved. It just doesn't seem to have the staying power of Anderson's later movies.
