Review of Hard Eight (1997) by John A — 02 Feb 2008
This is a type of film that you don't see a lot of these days: a simple, well told story. There are no gimmicky plot twists, no flashy special effects and no wasted scenes, just good acting, a compelling story, a fine script with very well drawn characters and impressive, but unobtrusive, direction from Paul Thomas Anderson who makes his debut here.
As it's his first one, I guess it would be PTA's weakest film, but thats like being the worst player at the All-Star game: it's still better than just about anything else out there.
