Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Alex P — 09 Jun 2007
This is a an almost flawless film. PT Anderson's first work is his most pure and simple. Philip Baker Hall and John C. Reilly (two PT mainstays) are both fantastic as is Sam Jackson in a small but showy supporting role.
And Gwyneth Paltrow, who is the most overrated actress in the world, actually turns in some beautifully subtle and nuanced work in this. I give all credit to PT, a true actor's director and a man who never fails to draw out vivid and truthful portrayals from his entire casts.
