Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Robin W — 25 Jun 2007
Before making his mark with "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia", Paul Thomas Anderson directed a rather forgotten debut picture about an older gambling pro who acts as a mentor to a troubled young man.
It's extremely well-acted by all involved and is a terrific showcase for long-time character actor Philip Baker Hall, but it's pretty slow, drawn-out and lacks the energy of Anderson's later works.
Quite frankly, even though this film is over an hour shorter than "Magnolia", it feels like the longer movie.
