Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Kyle H — 05 Feb 2008
Definetely impressive for a first feature, but also not the grandest of attempts. You can clearly see Paul Thomas' ability to get what he wants from the actors and his ability with story-telling. Most Paul Thomas' movies are a little ambigious with some unclear spots, but this one needed to answer a few ones a little more clearly.
Nothing a second viewing probably couldn't solve. Anyways, I got a kick out of hearing "Jimmy Gator" as one of the thugs that Sydney hung out with back in the day, but I won't spoil it for people who haven't seen other Paul Thomas' films.
Also, Philip Baker Hall proves once again, that he's pretty damn underrated.
