Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Jerome V — 27 Feb 2008
Now that Paul Thomas Anderson has received some long deserved accolades and an Oscar nomination for the masterwork that is There Will Be Blood, let me take a moment to direct any of you unfamiliar to his 1997 debut.
The cast alone is a testament, and all are excellent. This remarkably subtle character piece veers into noir about halfway thru and it's beautifully done.
Anderson is my favorite contemporary director (hail Marty), and his skills are in evidence here at the start.
That ended awkwardly.
