Review of Hard Eight (1997) by John M — 05 Mar 2008
A promising debut from P.T. Anderson, but I think I was expecting more from already seeing Magnolia and Boogie Nights. All the leads turn in fine performances, and Philip Baker Hall can carry a movie. It's a fascinating character study, but after a strong start, it sadly drags.
I grew restless and fidgety, even though I did like what I was seeing. Now that I have seen every movie directed by P.T. Anderson, I think that he hasn't yet directed his very best movie he will be remembered for, which is a very good thing, because he has already made some real winners.
