Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Eitan F — 14 Apr 2008
P.T. Anderson's first film provides a unique lens through which we can see all of his later, greater works. As Shira said, it's definitely an unpolished, film-school-y kind of affair, with lots of P.
T.A. big ideas (imagined families, crime, the loneliness of wealth) and quite excellent acting. It must be said that Quentin Tarantino basically copied a scene straight out of this movie and stuck it in Jackie Brown -- someone sits in a chair, in the dark, practicing with a gun, pointing it at a door, waiting for Samuel L.
Jackson to come home.
