Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Larkin H — 27 May 2008
PT Anderson's(Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood) first film and what a debut! While PT's trademarks are here(disconnected characters forming an unlikely "family", tracking shots, talky scenes) are all here.
What's strange is that, unlike the almost labyrinthine setups of Boogie Nights and Magnolia, this is a very small story with only a few characters. PT's knack for amazing dialogue, tension, and great characters sustain the story.
This is absolutely some of the best dialogue ever written and I've seen almost 2000 films, so take that as you will. A must see.
