Philip Baker Hall is outstanding. Not only does he give a great performance he looks the part as the retired gangster who's paying for his former lifestyle in his head. PTA's writing is brilliant and Sydney/Hard Eight shows he had this talent right from the jump.
And his direction is chalk full of brilliant little touches that most directors try to show off to say "yes I did that, i'm great".
