Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Cory T — 28 Sep 2008
The faults of this film do not represent any lack of vision from genius director PT Anderson (I do not use the word genius lightly), but instead the inability of others to recognize it. From what I understand, this film was originally cut at about 2.
5 hours, and then cut down to about 1 hour 45 minutes at the request of of the studio heads. This resulted in the loss of many PT Anderson trademarks (long takes, more character development, etc.) and a clear division between which sequences in the film were cut by Anderson, and which were cut by the studio execs.
But the sections where Anderson's influence shines through contain emotion and power that clearly shows the talent at work behind the camera. This is a debut not to be missed.
