Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Ross M — 04 Sep 2010
Probably one of the most under appreciated crime films of the 1990's. Paul Thomas Anderson's debut is written with elogance and directed with clean cut precision.from a man who was only 26 to write and directed a film like this all on his own is admirble to say the least.
The fact that his career didn't just fizzle out after this is even more exceptional. he went on to become even better, especially with his grand classic Magnolia. One of the best directors of modern times, this is the most under rated American crime debut since the Coen Brothers' Blood Simple back in 1984.
