Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Alonso A — 21 Sep 2012
Paul Thomas Anderson's first film. Just finishing film school, and before his breakthrough with Boogie Nights, Anderson shows us his potential with this stylish drama with sparks of noir. Casting John C.
Reilly and Philip Baker Hall, who would eventually become constant in his films, and seeing Philip Seymour Hoffman in a sort of cameo, shows us that Anderson has always known how to choose his cast in the right way.
The actings from the leading roles are splendid, althought the character despiction isn't as polished as in Anderson's later films. Solid, good drama, amazing score, great cast and an overwhelming style, P.
T. Anderson showed us a glimpse of his potential, that talent that later will become undeniable for movie fans.
