Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Richunkle S — 13 Feb 2008
This was a very strong debut by Paul Thomas Anderson. The man is a master. This movie wasn't without its faults. The pacing seemed a bit off, and the plot twist wasn't really that intriguing. But this movie wasn't really about the plot.
Paul Thomas Anderson always tries to create characters that feel real, so they may not always say or do the right things but they come across as very human. All of the actors gave great performances, and the cinematography was amazing.
Paul Thomas Anderson may not have gotten the whole plot thing down until his next movie, Boogie Nights, but this film still really draws you into its own confused, emotionally crippled little world, and the whole feel of the movie and the characters seems like it would be representative of the type of people who would choose to live in Las Vegas and the sort of lives they would lead.
