Review of Hard Eight (1997) by Andhika B — 27 Feb 2010
With Hard Eight, I finally accomplished my PTA experiences, and for what it's worth, I can say that this is a solid debut from the soon-to-be-a-legend director. From the scale of the film, at only 1 and 33 minutes, this is closer to punch-Drunk Love.
But from the tone of it, it resemblances Magnolia (not that there are any connection -storywise- ), with no less than 3 actors who spend time in this film, also appears in Magnolia ( Phillip Baker Hall, John C.
Reilly, and a magnificent cameo by Phillip Seymour-Hoffman ), and with Aimee Mann's song closes the film credit. And overall, that is not a bad thing, since Magnolia is my favorite PTA film to date, this, being some kind of 'prototype' of that film is just somewhat, Rejuvenating ! (and also, don't miss that Jimmy Gator mentioning in the film,.
Haha).
