Review of Hard Eight (1997) by William B — 08 Jun 2011
Though it was the first feature film by writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson, it's unfortunately the last one I saw. I didn't have mush of an idea for what to expect from this film, as far as plot that is, I did know I would enjoy a P.
T. Anderson flick. I was very pleased though, and it made a lot of sense as his first film. It was everything a first film by a great breakout filmmaker should be; it was bold, daring and unique. Similarly to Tarantino's Resevoir Dogs, Anderson immediately asserted himself among the current auteur filmmakers.
The central actors were all great, but arguably the strongest part of the film was the performance by Phillip Baker Hall. His character begins as a benevolent leader, but as the film develops he is revealed to be more than what he appears.
