Review of Hard Candy (2005) by Kelly C — 10 Jan 2011
One of the best thriller/horror movies I've ever seen. "Hailey" is one of my all time favorite movie characters. Derranged to some, heroic to others, watch it and I'm sure we'll agree that whatever she is, it's unforgettable.
The action sequences are wonderfully well- directed, but I must admit what takes place just below the screen will make you cringe worse than what happens on it. The film's director, David Slade made a some smart decisions which rescued this film from diving into a pool of blood which would doubtlessly sink what is most important to this film: Brian Nelson's great script and Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson's great performances.
I will close with a due warning statement: this movie, though not overly gory, is drenched in difficult to swallow subject matter, and perhaps if I had certain body parts, I would have felt a bit more squeamish. Men, that's a warning. People who like thrillers and are OK with being a little disturbed should not miss out on this wild ride.
