Review of Hard Candy (2005) by Tyler R — 30 May 2011
This a chilling and suspenseful film that is not for the faint of heart. Ellen Page is really convincing as a girl who gets revenge on a potential pedophile. She's cold heated and sadistic, but we can still identify with her. Patrick Wilson also gives a good performance and has real depth to his character. We almost felt sorry for him taking all of the abuse until we find out what he is guilty of. He takes the one note character and improves greatly upon it.
The script is well written and the dialogue kept me on the edge of my seat. It would have been nice to see Sandra Oh more because she's just in one scene, and it wasn't really an eventful scene at all. This is a very dark movie and it reminded me of another torturous film called "Funny Games". Some people are going to be put off by its graphic and controversial nature, but it is a very effective thriller.
