Review of Hard Candy (2005) by J.j. W — 29 May 2012
Hard Candy has too little to go on. Ellen Page is perfectly casted for this role as a seemingly innocent serial killer bait and she performs her role very well. David Slade as director also does a good job of creating a very chilling atmosphere that avoids a lot of horror movie conventions.
Yet, the biggest problem is in the story as an overall. Hard Candy's theme and message is obvious. "Predators can be people you least expected, especially with our internet ages". That's a solid theme to build a story on.
Yet that's about all this movie has: foundation. Hard Candy struggles to churn out meaningful development throughout the entire course of the movie and the final twist doesn't add any dramatic validity to the movie.
Hard Candy is an interesting role reversal that we need to see more of in psychopathic thrillers. But movies need to be more about the story than the idea and Hard Candy doesn't do enough with it's idea to really be memorable.
