Review of Hard Candy (2005) by Robyn M — 19 Aug 2012
The genre, psychological thriller, says it all about this movie. The only reason I wanted to watch this movie so badly was because of Oomph's music video for "Beim ersten Mal tut's immer weh" and the amazing reviews I heard about it.
The movie definitely owned up to its reviews; however, this movie was not really easy to watch. I did a lot of reading and research, after I watched this movie, and I noticed that many people didn't like the ending, most of them being male audience.
Similar to the male audience, the one problem I had with this movie is you sometimes tend to forget that the pedophile is the bad guy and you end up having sympathy for the devil. Many of the audience started feeling sympathy for Jeff (the pedophile) in the castration scene when he is crying and begging Hayley to not do it.
Sure it was sad and hard to watch since I have a soft spot for people when they cry, but come on people have you forgotten that this man raped and killed underage girls? Was anyone there to feel sympathy for those girls when they were begging for their lives? Even though I am pro Hayley torturing Jeff I have to agree that the directors could have done a better job at making him look like a monster rather than an innocent guy.
This lead to people hating the ending since many wanted Hayley dead instead of Jeff. To me this movie was brilliant. I loved the twisted factor that the kid gets the pedophile rather than the pedophile getting the kid.
I have seen many movies from Ellen Page and I have to say this was by far her best role yet. She played the raging teen flawlessly and I cannot imagine anyone else pulling off that role.
