Review of Hard Boiled (1992) by Forrest K — 26 Nov 2010
Hard Boiled violates nearly all of my aesthetic instincts: gratuitous slo-mo and speed ramps, style entirely over substance, paper-thin characters and empty, maniacal villains. And yet...those exquisite, exquisite action scenes.
The action choreography turns this film into a violent ballet, more about the grace of movement through the frame than any cohesive or touching plot. While I wish it knew when to say enough, there's something to be admired in its audacious, "even the kitchen sink" attitude.
