Review of Hard Boiled (1992) by Nate A — 23 Apr 2011
I had pretty high expectations for this, since the shoot-outs in this are somewhat legendary in the film industry. And I gotta tell you...it has this reputation for a reason.
They are spectacular. Over-the-top, incredibly violent, silly, melodramatic...and oh, so entertaining. I mean, one of the scenes has a cop shooting his way out of a burning hospital while cradling a baby.
The entire last half of the film with the showdown in the hospital features some of the finest Hong Kong bullet ballet I've seen.
Chow Yun-Fat and Tony Leung, who would both go on to be fine actors in many different kinds of films, are both good leads and bring a lot of charisma to the roles. The story itself...well, it's there. It makes sense and is satisfying, but it's not why you're watching this film.
