Review of Harakiri (1962) by Richard L — 17 Jul 2008
An unspeakably great movie. Layered with such precision and sentiment, Kobayashi takes the viewer through an unexpected journey. The film begins with an ironic detachment, ends with an affecting punch, and shifts your empathy and expectations along the way.
The knowledge you gain throughout the movie changes your ideas about everything that came before. Peeling off each layer reveals a new and different story every time, and at its best, the movie makes you cringe with disgust and guilt at your own simple initial reactions.
Probably the best movie I have ever seen.
