Review of Happythankyoumoreplease (2011) by Charlie Y — 01 Oct 2012
Better than most indie comedies these days, but still not a good movie..
PLOT:It's really about the twisted lives of a small group of New Yorkers There are 4 main stories here. Sam Wexler (Josh Radnor)is on his way to a big presentation when a young boy named Rasheen gets separated from his foster parents. So, Sam has to take care of him until he can contact someone, if he ever does. His best friend, Annie (Malin Ackerman) suffers from a disease that makes her bald (not cancer) and doesn't think she's beautiful. She always seem to goes after a jerk guys na dthe only one that doesn't seem to be a jerk is a creep, Sam #2 (Tony Hale), but is he as much of a creep as she thinks he is? Mary-Catherine (Zoe Kazaan), his cousin, is having troubles with her relationship with her boyfriend who wants to move to LA, when she despises the city. Sam's love interest, Mississippi, has a horrible life and also always falls for the players just as Annie does. Basically, the pot is a look into the mixed up life of several New Yorkers. The plot itself is mixed up in whether it wants to be a dysfunctional drama or heartwarming drama (Bet now you're wondering how I didn't see this in the Lovely Bones?) and it all jus blends to be truly boring.
ACTING:Decent acting. I've seen better, but this is not bad either. The shiners are Josh Radnor, Zoe Kazan, Malin Ackerman, and the actor who played Mary-Catherine's husband.
SOUNDTRACK:Typical indie soundtrack made up of iTunes Indie Spotlight-type songs, except mostly by the same artist. It just brought it indie movie glory.
CAMERAWORK:Can you say "shaky cam"? Most of the movie was filmed through a shaky camera. It did catch some nice shots when no one was MOVING.
OTHER CONTENT:As I said before, this movie was mainly boring. It tries to be funny, deep, and heartwarming in several scenes, but it never succeeds because the audience is so half-asleep they can't comprehend what's going on. In a way, it ends up to just be another boring, cheesy indie comedy. But don't get me wrong, it has some funny scenes as well, but not enough to completely save this movie from the RT splat.
OVERALL, an indie comedy that's not the worst thing I'v ever seen, with a boring plot, decent acting, typical score, shaky cam, and a few laughs.
